Fox Ready To Cover The Fall Classic

By George Stahl

Fox begins coverage of its second World Series with the same three announcers that it used in the 1996 World Series - Joe Buck, Tim McCarver and Bob Brenly.

This year, Fox will use 19 cameras to follow the action, including a "Super Shot" camera, a manned camera stationed along the third-base line that will focus on close-up action. Fox will keep the camera, which is connected to a super slow-motion machine, on the ball.

John Filipelli is the producer and Bill Webb the director. Webb, by the way, already has captured lots of baseball history this year. He has directed the broadcasts of Mark McGwire's 62nd home run for Fox as well as David Wells perfect game and Cal Ripken's streak-ending game for Madison Square Garden network.

Fox said it has sold most of the commercial time for the World Series. To read more about that and some of the commercials planned for the World Series, click here.

Umpire Rich Garcia, the crew chief and a fan favorite at Yankee Stadium, will open the Series behind the plate for Game 1. In the American League Championship Series two years ago, he called fan interference when 12-year-old Jeffrey Maier reached over the right-field wall at Yankee Stadium. The call gave the Yankees' Derek Jeter an eighth-inning home run that tied the score 4-4. New York went on to a 5-4, 11-inning victory, and Garcia admitted he made a mistake.

American League umpires Dale Scott and Tim Tschida also will be part of the World Series crew, joined by National League umpires Mark Hirschbeck, Jerry Crawford and Dana DeMuth.

George's Prediction: Although I live in the New York area, I am not a Yankees fan. Nor am I a Padres fan. (Go Phils!) However, I think the Yankees are clearly the dominant team in this series. The Yanks have the better lineup, starting pitching, relievers and bench. Plus, they are on a history-making mission this season. Yankees in five.
