- The
Consensus poll was formed by combining the preseason top 25 lists
of six preview magazines. (The numbers in
parentheses are the numbers of first-place votes).
- The
AP preseason poll was voted on by
70 sports writers and broadcasters.
- The
ESPN/USA Today preseason poll was
voted on by 62 Division I coaches.
Notes
on the polls:
Amazingly,
the three polls have the same ten teams in the top ten. As a matter
of fact, four teams have the same rank in all three polls - No.
1 Florida State, No. 2 Tennessee, No. 9 Ohio State and No. 10 Wisconsin.
Later, No. 20 Alabama, No. 22 Arkansas and No. 24 Virginia are ranked
at the same spot in all three polls.
Overall,
no major differences between the three polls. The biggest discrepencies
are Texas (No. 21 consensus, No. 17 AP and No. 16 ESPN), USC (No.
15 consensus, No. 19 AP and No. 21 ESPN) and BYU (No. 23 consensus
and No. 26 in the AP and ESPN polls).

Notes
on the consensus poll:
Mississippi
State has the biggest discrepency of any school. Street
& Smith's has them at 15th, while Athlon
pegs them at 57th. The highest-ranked team with the biggest difference
is Virginia Tech, who is No. 6 in Phil
Steele's and in Athlon,
but No. 30 in The Sporting
News.
Auburn
is Phil Steele's admitted
surprise top 25 pick at No. 25. The
Sporting News has the Tigers as low as No. 60. Before you laugh
at Phil Steele's poll, though,
remember he had Tennesee higher than any other preseason publication
last year at No. 7.
Five
of the six magazines have Arizona either No. 3 or No. 4. Phil
Steele's puts the Wildcats at No. 11.
Some
magazines rank all 114 Division I-A teams and, no surprise, the
teams considered the worst in Division I-A are the two new teams
this year: Buffalo (Athlon
and Lindy's) and
Middle Tennessee State (The Sporting
News).
