  • The Consensus poll was formed by combining the preseason top 25 lists of the seven preview magazines reviewed.
  • The AP preseason poll was voted on by 70 sports writers and broadcasters.
  • The ESPN/USA Today preseason poll was voted on by 62 Division I coaches.

Notes on the polls:
Amazingly, the consensus poll matched eight of the top 10 teams in the AP poll exactly and five of the top 10 in the ESPN poll. As a matter of fact, the top six teams in the three polls are the same and in the same order, except for Nebraska and Florida being switched in the ESPN/USA Today poll.

Overall, no major differences between the consensus poll and the AP poll. The biggest discrepencies are UCLA (#7 AP, #11 consensus), North Carolina (#12 AP, #16 consensus) and Southern Miss (#21 AP, #25 consensus).

No major differences also between the consensus poll and the coaches poll. The biggest discrepencies are Virginia (#19 coaches, #13 consensus) and Auburn (#22 coaches, #29 consensus). Interestingly, the AP poll split the difference in both cases - Virginia (#16) and Auburn (#25).

In the magazines for the consensus poll, Arizona St. has the biggest discrepency in rank among the teams in the top 10. The Sporting News ranks the Sun Devils at 5, while Phil Steele has them at 21. Overall, Georgia has the biggest difference in the top 25, as Preview Sports rates the Bulldogs at 12, while Phil Steele sticks them at 40.

Athlon costs Colorado a top 25 ranking in the consensus poll by plugging them in at 40. Phil Steele, on the other hand, has them at 8.

Some magazines rank all 112 Division I-A teams, so for the record, here are those teams considered the worst in I-A: Eastern Michigan (Athlon), Northern Illinois (Lindy's) and Idaho (The Sporting News).
