A Unique Look At The Bowls
Father, Son Review Outback, Cotton, Gator, Citrus & Rose Coverage

By Randy Williams

This season, ArmchairQB.com has reviewed the telecasts of numerous college football games - from the Kickoff Classic to the Big 12 and SEC championships. George and I are die-hard sports fans but our journalism degrees usually lead us to analyze broadcasts from a technical point of view.

Well, I decided to do things differently on New Year's Day. With the most important games of the college season upon us, I thought it'd be a nice touch to review the day's telecasts from the perspective of a big fan without a journalism degree. Luckily, I didn''t have to travel far for help, enlisting my father, Randy Williams, Sr., to provide his opinions.

Broadcasts, networks and announcers:
Outback Bowl, 11 a.m.:
Penn State-Kentucky, ESPN's Ron Franklin, Mike Gottfried & sideline reporter Adrian Karsten
Cotton Bowl, 11 a.m.: Texas-Mississippi State, Fox's Joe Buck, Bill Maas & sideline reporters Suzy Kolber and Ron Pitts
Gator Bowl, 12:30 p.m.: Notre Dame-Georgia Tech, NBC's Tom Hammond, Pat Haden & sideline reporter Jim Gray.
Florida Citrus Bowl, 1 p.m.: Michigan-Arkansas, ABC's Terry Gannon, Tim Brant & sideline reporter Dean Blevins.
Rose Bowl, 5 p.m.: UCLA-Wisconsin, ABC's Keith Jackson, Bob Griese and sideline reporter Lynn Swann.

Randy Sr.'s Likes:
Jackson. "He's Old Faithful. He's just fits college football like hand-in-glove. He's the epitome of the excellent announcer - he seems to naturally know what he is doing."

Top Jacksonism:
1. "He weighs about 260 depending upon the kind of breakfast he had," referring to Wisconsin running back Ron Dayne.

Randy Sr.'s Dislikes:
1. ESPN's flashing of its logo before and after each replay.
2. Lee Corso. - "He's always seemed like a big mouth to me."
3. The lack of a running time/score element during NBC games.

Randy Sr.'s Favorite Commercial:
"I love the way those dogs attack the kids in that ad," referring to a spot for Outpost.com in which a pack of wolves are turned loose on unsuspecting band members.

Randy Sr.'s General Observations:
1. "(Kentucky coach Hal Mumme) looks like Sam Malone," after an early shot of the Wildcats' coach on the sideline.
2. "Son, I think you need to lose a good 30 pounds," after noticing me reclining on the couch.
3. "Millen, you're full of it," reacting to a statement by Fox's Bill Maas, a Matt Millen-soundalike, that Mississippi State coach Jackie Sherrill is a class act. My dad astutely noted that Sherrill left his job at Texas A&M after allegations of cheating surfaced.

Randy Sr.'s Favorite Announcers:
"I like Jackson and Haden because they don't feel like they have to talk every second," referring to his favorite play-by-play and color man, respectively.

Randy Sr.'s Favorite Snack:

Meatballs, sweet and sour.

Randy Sr. On Sideline Reporters:

"As far as I'm concerned, I get enough reporting. All they do (when interviewing head coaches) is ask stupid questions and get stupid answers."

Randy Sr. On Halftime Shows:
"I think it's a shame that the media people think it's necessary to show all the highlights from every game instead of showing the great bands. Those kids work very hard." It should be noted that my old man attended VMI, where marching, like a bad haircut, was mandatory.

Top Tips/Information:

1.
ESPN's Franklin said Kentucky coach Hal Mumme signed a new contract. He also said the Browns are considering a veteran quarterback, adding that UK's Tim Couch won't leave college unless he'll be the top NFL draft pick.
2. Fox's Kolber reminded that Texas coaching legend Darrell Royal got his start at Mississippi State, the team's opponent in the Cotton Bowl. (An assist to my mom, Maurine, on this one.)

Top Stats:
1.
At one point in the third quarter, Texas had scored three touchdowns without running a play in the red zone.
2. ESPN's Gottfried said Penn State has allowed just 30 points in the first quarter this season.

Dan Dierdorf Exaggeration Award:
"That's as good a run as I've ever seen." - Maas, on a two-yard third-quarter touchdown by Ricky Williams.

Top Replay:

Fox first-quarter replay showed Texas defensive back Donald McCowen should have been called for pass interference.

Glitch-A-Thon:
ABC's Rose Bowl production was far from error-free as Jackson's opening comments sounded like he was on speakerphone and Swann couldn't be heard at the start of one piece. There were further mistakes but I'm not about to beat on a man on his way out.
