And
The Emmy Goes To...
CBS
Won More Trophies, But Fox Captured More Big Ones.
By
George Stahl
NEW
YORK (AQB)--CBS, thanks to its Olympic coverage, went home Wednesday
night with the most Sports Emmys (nine), but Fox's NFL team helped
the network capture more of the prestigious awards at the 20th Annual
Sports Emmy Awards.
However,
the star of the night was an Ol' Hoss who doesn't even broadcast
games anymore. ABC's former college football announcer, Keith Jackson,
garnered the Emmy for best play-by-play announcer, moments after
receiving the Sports Lifetime Achievement Award.
"I
don't know if I deserve this, but I'll take it," the septuagenarian
said about the play-by-play Emmy. Past
recipients of his lifetime achievement award include Jim McKay,
Curt Gowdy and Pat Summerall.
Fox
NFL Sunday took the triple crown in the studio categories, garnering
best studio show, best studio host (James Brown) and best studio
analyst (Cris Collinsworth, his second in a row). Fox's top NFL
color man, John Madden, won the best analyst Emmy for the 12th time.
Of
CBS' nine wins, seven were related to Olympic programming. The host
of the 1998 Winter Olympics from Nagano, Japan, had entered the
evening with the most nominations (30).
HBO
tied Fox for the second-most wins by getting eight Emmys, including
three for Real Sports with Bryant Gumbel, one for its Babe
Ruth documentary and one for its Sugar Ray Robinson documentary.
NBC,
which had the second-most nominations (19), won five Emmys, including
the biggest surprise of the night. The network's NBC Golf Tour
captured best live sports series, beating out stalwarts such as
ABC's college football, ESPN and Fox's baseball coverage and the
NBA on NBC.
"I
never thought I'd see the day that golf would win an Emmy,"
NBC executive producer Tom Roy said.
Fox's
broadcast of the game in which Mark McGwire hit his 62nd home run
won for best live sports special.
After
NBC's five Emmys were ESPN2 with three and then ESPN, ABC, CNBC
and Outdoor Life Network with one each.
The
winners were chosen by a panel of their peers from more than 600
entries in 27 categories and areas. A list of the winners and nominees
appears below.
