Playing
For Pride
Lehigh-Lafayette
Rivalry Is One For The Ages
By Randy

They
don't play The Game for the Beer Barrel, the Old Oaken Bucket or the Iron
Bowl. No, Lehigh and Lafayette play for something much more imporant.
Pride.
The teams met for the 134th time last Saturday, the most contests between
two teams in college football history. Lehigh won, 31-7, to capture the
Patriot League title and an NCAA playoff berth with an 11-0 record. But,
The Game is about much more than the final score.
Lehigh-Lafayette is about love, discipline and even a little football.
It's waking up that Saturday morning so nervous that you don't know if
you can make it to kickoff. It's loving your teammates more than you
ever imagined. And hating the opposition just as much.
It's separating a defensive back's shoulder on a safety blitz, as I did
in my senior year of 1992. And checking on his condition after the clock
reads 0:00, as I also did.
It's two teams with true scholar-athletes battling with every ounce of
their heart and guts, like they will in the boardrooms 25 years later.
And two teams who respect each other deeply, even though they'll never
admit it.
Lehigh-Lafayette. It isn't Ohio State-Michigan, Auburn-Alabama or Florida-Florida
State. And I couldn't be happier.
