Are You Ready For Some Football At 9 p.m. Again?
NFL, ABC Move MNF Back To Its Original Time.

By George Stahl

NEW YORK (AQB)--Upon further review, maybe a 9 p.m. ET start wasn't so bad after all.

At least that's what the NFL and ABC decided as the league and the network returned Monday Night Football to its original time slot after one year of poor ratings at 8:20 p.m. and a 20-minute Monday Night Blast pregame show.

Now if they could just bring back Howard Cosell for the program's 30th season...

ABC's 1999 MNF Schedule
Sept. 13 Miami at Denver
Sept. 20 Atlanta at Dallas
Sept. 27 San Francisco at Arizona
Oct. 4 Buffalo at Miami
Oct. 11 Jacksonville at N.Y. Jets
Oct. 18 Dallas at N.Y. Giants
Oct. 25 Atlanta at Pittsburgh
Nov. 1 Seattle at Green Bay
Nov. 8 Dallas at Minnesota
Nov. 15 N.Y. Jets at New England
Nov. 22 Oakland at Denver
Nov. 29 Green Bay at San Fran
Dec. 6 Minnesota at Tampa Bay
Dec. 13 Denver at Jacksonville
Dec. 20 Green Bay at Minnesota
Dec. 27 N.Y. Jets at Miami
Jan. 3 San Francisco at Atlanta
Jan. 8 Wild Card Doubleheader
Jan. 30 Super Bowl XXXIV

This past season, with Boomer Esiason replacing longtime fixture Frank Gifford in the booth, Monday Night Football recorded its lowest average rating, 13.9, in the program's 29-year history. However, MNF remains the No. 1 show so far this year among men 18-49.

An NFL spokesman said the change to a 9:07 p.m. ET kickoff was the league's decision "in consultation with ABC."

The league also decided to give ABC some juicy games, such as Mike Holmgren's return to Lambeau Field when the Seahawks and Packers meet at Lambeau Field Nov. 1; a great NFC rivalry and rematch of the classic 1998 wild card game when the Packers and 49ers play in San Francisco Nov. 29; and the last NFL game of the 1900s when the Jets battle the Dolphins in Miami Dec. 27.

Of course, ABC has the juiciest game of all - Super Bowl XXXIV on Jan. 30 in Atlanta.

In all, seven teams appear three times each on Monday Night Football next season: the defending two-time Super Bowl champion Denver Broncos, NFC champion Atlanta Falcons, NFC East champ Dallas Cowboys, NFC Central champion Minnesota Vikings, AFC East champ New York Jets, the Miami Dolphins and the Green Bay Packers.

ABC, though, did not mention MNF's announcers in its press release. An ABC spokeswoman said Al Michaels and Boomer Esiason remain the announcers; however, another person may be added before the start of the season.

In other words, nothing has changed in the broadcast booth since ABC decided not to bring back 12-year MNF analyst Dan Dierdorf and 28-year show veteran Frank Gifford.

ABC said it will announce the new programming for the 8-9 p.m. Monday slot when the television network unveils its primetime lineup May 18.
